New Year’s Wish with the Christ Child

anonymous, 1480 - 1499

The invention of printmaking made it possible to disseminate images in large numbers. This stimulated the development of new art forms, such as the printed New Year’s card. Exchanging them became a popular custom, as it still is nowadays. That the earliest examples, such as this one, are very rare is hardly surprising. After all, who keeps all the New Year’s cards they ever received?
