Netherlands and Bluebeard
Piet van der Hem (mentioned on object), 1915-10-09
Germany is presented here as the cruel murderer Bluebeard, from the fairy tale of the same name. Germany is making advances on the neutral Netherlands, a sweet and innocent young woman in Dutch traditional dress. Germany says that there’s nothing to be afraid of, but we know better: in the wardrobe hang the bodies of other neighbouring countries for whom things haven’t gone quite so well: Belgium, Poland, Schleswig-Holstein and Alsace-Lorraine.
