Model van een stuurseiner en axiometer. Het stuurwiel is bevestigd aan een wekkervormige kast op vier kleine wieltjes. Net onder het stuurwiel is een interne lamp in de kast aangebracht. Aan de andere kant heeft de kast een grote wijzerplaat, aan de binnenkant met melkglas bedekt en van binnenuit door de lamp verlicht. In de wijzerplaat is een verticale sleuf uitgespaard, en aan weerszijden cirkelsegmenten, waarin korte sleuven verschijnen bij draaiing van het stuurwiel. De wijzerplaat is op kleinere schaal bovenop de kast herhaald. Het interne raderwerk is op dit moment buiten werking. De handleiding die bij dit model hoorde, ontbreekt.

Explanatory note

  • Behalve als indicateur voor de stuurman, kon dit apparaat ook gebruikt worden als axiometer, waarbij het een stuurmachine aandreef. Dit toestel is in de literatuur nog niet teruggevonden.

Model of a steering indicator and axiometer.

The steering wheel is attached to an alarm clock-shaped casing on four small wheels. Just below the steering wheel is a lamp in the casing, which lights it from the inside. On the other side, the casing has a large dial covered with opaque glass on the inside. A large vertical slot is cut out of the dial, as are two quadrants open on each side. When turning the steering wheel, short slots light up according to the position of the steering wheel and will project their silhouette on to the floor or opposing wall. The dial is duplicated on a smaller scale on top of the casing, for the benefit of the man at the wheel. The internal gearwork of the model is not functioning. The manual that belongs to the model is missing.

The model was shown at the Exhibition Universelle in Paris in 1867. It was sent to The Hague by Chief Engineer J.W. Calten in 1877.1HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 11/4/1877 N34, 19/4/1877 N16. Besides serving as an indicator dial for the man at the wheel, the machine was used as an axiometer to drive the steering gear.
