The first steamships in the Netherlands were driven by paddle wheels. A remarkable number of these vessels were used as ferries. Steam propulsion guaranteed a reliable connection, as steamships could continue service when there was no wind. The ferry steamer Wilhelmina.

  • Description

    Spantmodel van een raderstoomboot, zeer gedetailleerd en binnen beschoten. Lang platbodem vaartuig, in de zijden verbreed tot de breedte van de raderkasten. Twee niveau's: benedendeks en bovendek met laag dekhuis, die gedeeltelijk open zijn om de binnenkant te laten zien. Stoommachine noch raderwielen zijn op het model aangebracht. De raderkasten kunnen bovenop geopend worden en hebben gemakken aan de achterzijde. Breed roer en gebogen loopplank voor de stuurman. De loopplanken hebben een takel met gewichten binnen. Kaapstander op het achterdek en lier op het voordek. Het model heeft een lange schoorsteen en een tuig van een mast met ra en een boegspriet. Schaal 1:30 (schatting).

Explanatory note

  • De Wilhelmina werd in 1822 vermoedelijk op de Rijkswerf te Rotterdam gebouwd als een van een serie van drie stoomveerboten naar ontwerp van G.M. Roentgen, waarvan de eerste in 1821 in Engeland werd gebouwd. De 32 pk stoommachine werd geleverd door Cockerill in Seraing. De Wilhelmina deed dienst als Rijksveer op het Hollands Diep bij de Moerdijk tot 1847 en werd in 1858 verkocht.

Entry

Wooden frame model of a paddle steamer mounted on a stand.

Long, flat-bottomed vessel, broadened in the sides to the full width of the paddle boxes. It has one deck with a low deckhouse and parts are left open in order to reveal the interior. Neither engine nor paddle wheels are mounted on the model. The paddle boxes can be opened at the top and have privies aft. The model features a broad rudder and an arched scaffolding for the helmsman. The gangways have a tackle with weights inside. A capstan aft and a winch on the foredeck are specified. The model has a tall brass funnel and is rigged with one mast with a yard and a bowsprit.

The model was restored in the 1980s in the Maritiem Museum in Rotterdam. Wilhelmina was built in the United Kingdom by the Watt company in 1821, as the first of a series of three ferries designed by Gerard Moritz Roentgen (1795-1852). The other two ferries, Rotterdam and Moerdijk, were built in the Netherlands. The 32 hp engine was supplied by Cockerill in Seraing. Wilhelmina was used as a ferry on the Hollands Diep near the Moerdijk until 1847 and was sold in 1858.1J.M.
