Zeer fraai constructiemodel van een kraan, in zijn geheel draaiend om een verticale as. Het takel, op de windas van de tredmolen bevestigd, loopt via een tussenschijf naar een schijf in de top, naar beneden door een takelblok met een loden gewicht, en terug naar de top.

Explanatory note

  • Dit model stelt de artilleriekraan van de werf te Antwerpen voor, die in 1814 naar Vlissingen werd overgebracht. Dit soort kranen kwam in Napoleontische tijd veel voor en is te zien op verschillende schilderijen van Franse havens.

Entry

Wooden construction model of a crane, rotating on a vertical axis. The cordage, applied to the axle of the treadmill, runs from one sheave to another at the top, down to the block which bears a lead weight, and back to the top.

This model represents the artillery crane of the dockyard at Antwerp which was transferred to Flushing in 1814.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 42. It seems to have been a common artillery crane in the Napoleonic era and several models are known to exist;2Paris, Musée national de la Marine, inv. nos. MnM 13 PA 13 and 17; London, Science Museum, inv. no. 1914-572. the crane also appears on numerous paintings of French ports.3Including J. van Bree, Lancement du vaisseau le Friedland, a Anvers, le 2 mai 1810, 1810, in the collection of Musée de Versailles, see Maquettes de la marine impériale.
