Model of a Windlass

Model van een braadspil op een vloerplank. De trommel, opgehangen tussen twee wangen die de braadspilbeting vormen met twee knechten ieder, heeft alleen aan stuurboord gaten voor windbomen: twee doorlopende en vier ondiepe gaten. De braadspil kan ook bediend worden met een enkele windboom aan stuurboord, die met een pal in een tandwiel grijpt. In het midden staat een stut met twee houten pallen, die in het tandwielgedeelte van de trommel grijpen om het teruglopen te voorkomen. De wangen of braadspilbeting kunnen ieder in twee helften uiteengenomen worden. In de vloerplank zit een rechthoekig gat voor onbekend doel. Schaal 1:10 (schatting).

Entry

Construction model of a windlass, mounted on a base.

The barrel, hanging in two cheeks forming the carrick bitt with two knightheads each, only has holes for handspikes on the starboard side: two through holes and four shallow. The windlass can also be operated with just one handspike, fixed with a pawl on a cogwheel outside the starboard cheek. At the centre there is a post with two wooden pawls, engaging in the toothed section of the barrel to prevent it from turning back. The cheeks or carrick bitt can be taken apart in two halves.1J.M.
