‘Mary Mother’
Julia Margaret Cameron, 1867
Striving for the recognition of photography as an art form, Julia Margaret Cameron experimented in capturing narrative scenes. She made series of photographs depicting Biblical characters, such as the Virgin Mary here. Her maid Mary Hillier often posed for this role. With this picture, Cameron referred to the serene Madonna portraits by the then highly admired Italian painter Raphael. The rounded top arouses associations with an altarpiece.
