Man playing the banjo

Ed van der Elsken, c. 1949

Later in his career Van der Elsken was ambitious and brazen enough to approach people directly and portray them up close. In his earliest work, however, he often literally kept his distance. He preferred to place the people he noticed in some kind of setting. Surely it is not a coincidence that the gun in the film poster seems to be aimed at the banjo player.
