Lidded thumb glass

anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1700

The glass owes its name to the circular ‘holes’ for thumbs on its bowl. While drinking, these indentations made it easier to keep a firmer grip. This was necessary, since when filled the glass could weigh up to four kilos! It was most likely used for special occasions. The glass would have been passed from person to person during a communal toast.
