Latona after the Birth of Apollo and Diana

Diana Scultori (mentioned on object), c. 1557 - c. 1612

The supreme god Jupiter impregnated Latona. His jealous wife Hera did not grant her a safe place to deliver her baby. Eventually, Latona gave birth on the inhospitable island of Delos. This mythological story has rarely been depicted in art. Diana Mantuana added some elements to Giulio Romano’s design, such as the leafy branches above the improvised tent. She thus created a triangle within the composition, making it more balanced and appealing.
