Pair of pistols and a bullet associated with the death of William Frederick of Nassau, Stadtholder of Friesland

anonymous, c. 1650

When Stadtholder William Frederick inspected one of these pistols on 24 October 1664, the weapon accidentally fired, fatally wounding him in the face. The bullet displayed here was found in the other pistol. Although these objects do not tell a very heroic tale, they were nevertheless accorded a place in the collection of the Frisian stadtholders.

Explanatory note

  • Met één van deze pistolen heeft Willem Frederik, Graaf van Nassau, Katzenelnbogen, Dietz en Spiegelberg en stadhouder van Friesland (vanaf 1640), Groningen en Drenthe (vanaf 1650) zich op 31 oktober 1664 per ongeluk dodelijk verwond. Bij restauratie van het koppel pistolen werd deze onafgevuurde kogel aangetroffen in één van de wapens.
