Kimono for a young woman

anonymous, 1960 - 1980

The peony decoration consists of thousands of little squares with dots in them. Each square is made by wrapping a piece of fabric with a thread. Once the pattern has been made in this way, the entire piece of fabric is soaked in a blue dye bath. The wrapped parts remain undyed and form the white squares. Two sizes of squares have been used, to give the image depth.
