Joseph Revealing Himself to his Brothers

Gerard de Lairesse (mentioned on object), 1668

Joseph’s jealous brothers sold him as a young boy. Since then he had risen from the ranks, and even been appointed vizier of Egypt by Pharaoh. When his brothers travelled to Egypt to buy food, they did not recognize him. Only during a second visit did Joseph, here identifiable by his fine turban and rich clothing, become reconciled with his brothers.
