Jazz

Ed van der Elsken, 1958 - 1959

Ed van der Elsken captured the interaction between jazz musicians and their audiences during legendary night concerts in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. Screaming, Lionel Hampton whipped the young audience into a frenzy. The photograph of singer Sarah Vaughan’s arm gesture is the book’s closing chord. In the foreword, journalist Jan Vrijman writes about jazz: ‘As music, which casts all traditional rules overboard, it is youth music par excellence – resistance music.’
