Yoyusai (mentioned on object), c. 1800 - c. 1900

Pillow Japan 19th Century Signature: 'Yoyusai' Lacquer on wood The pillow is decorated with a bag containing alute (biwa). The openings are shaped in the form of a mouth organ (sho). Both symbols stand for a happy marriage. The two family crests on the bag further indicate that this must have been a wedding present. The drawer in the side of this 'scent pillow' could be used to hold fraganced substances that would perfume the hair during sleep.

    Rechthoekige doos, de bovenzijde ietwat concaaf, met opengewerkte delen in de vorm van een mondorgel (sho). Aan één korte zijde is een lade. Het kussen is bedekt met zwarte lak met op de bovenzijde, gedeeltelijk doorlopend op de zijkanten, een buidel waaruit de hals van een luit steekt; op de buidel bloemtakken; de buidel is dichtgebonden met een koord in zilver makie, eindigend in een bloem. (kleine beschadigingen op de hoeken)
