Canopy Bed

anonymous, c. 1775 - c. 1800

Following French fashion, Dutch furniture makers began making various sorts of canopy beds in the 18th century. This type was known as a lit à la française, even though the proportions do not entirely agree. An important feature is that the canopy had to be hung from the ceiling. The bed probably belonged to the De la Court family and came from Onsenoort mansion in Nieuwkuijk.

  • Description

    Hemelbed behangen met rode wollen stof, met passementen en franjes. Het wit geschilderde houtwerk is ondermeer versierd met roodachtig gekleurde "lopende-hondmotieven", rozetten, kelkklokjes en op de hemel met een blokrand. De bovendorpels van de beklede schotten zijn in het midden gebogen en eindigen in oplopende voluten; op het achterschot ligt een festoen en op het voorschot staat een vaas met festoen. Onder de onderregels en de hemel hangen lambrequins met kwasten; op de hemel staan vazen en strikken.
