Entry
Wooden ‘bread-and-butter’ style half block model of the starboard side of a two-masted flat-bottomed ship, mounted on a framed rectangular wooden backboard, painted white and blue.
The planking of the side above the waterline is outlined with pencil marks. The deck is closed and flush with the side. The model has a round bow and stern. The sternpost is very much raked and fitted with a broad rudder with a hand tiller. The sheer rises towards both ends. The wale and rail cap are painted black. The model features a black leeboard. The hull is round with a flat bottom and has been left unpainted below the waterline, exposing the ‘bread-and-butter’ style planking. The rig is detailed with two booms for the two masts, a bowsprit and an outrigger aft, all shown in a truncated form. The backboard is painted blue and white, indicating the waterline.
J. Bos, a shipwright from Flushing, made this model of a 17-metre-long pilot vessel in 1866. This type of ship, built specifically for the pilot service, was called a ‘rinkelaar’.
