Explanatory note

  • Het transportkorvet Dordrecht, lang 33.7 m, werd te Dordrecht gebouwd door I. Schouten in 1826-1828. Zij deed vooral dienst in de vaart op West-Indië. In 1847 werd zij afgevoerd van de sterkte en in Amsterdam als instituut voor scheepsjongens van de Zeil- en Roeivereniging in gebruik genomen.

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. No gun ports are indicated. The sheer is very slight. One wale is indicated and is painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail or galleries. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form. The mainmast and foremast are now missing, but their traces are still visible on the backboard.

The 8-gun transport sloop Dordrecht, 33.7 metres long, was built by I. Schouten in Dordrecht from 1826 to 1828. As a troop transport the sloop sailed mostly between the Netherlands and the Dutch West Indies. In 1847 the Dordrecht was decommissioned and brought to Amsterdam where it was used by the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeil- en Roeivereniging (Royal Dutch Sailing and Rowing Club) until 1913.1A.J.
