Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The model does not indicate any details of the forecastle, whereas the quarterdeck is outlined by ribbands with square hances. The sheer rises slightly towards the stern. Two wales and a sheer rail are indicated, all are painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead with two cheeks positioned directly on the beakhead, a beakhead bulkhead, part of a beakhead platform and two large bollard timbers. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail or quarter galleries. The model has a straight, square-headed rudder. The hull is round and is painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

The date on the model differs from the one found in the catalogue entry by Obreen.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 275. He probably confused the Pieter Paulus, renamed Utrecht in 1807, with the Utrecht built by Willem Lodewijk van Gent in Amsterdam in 1781. The 68-gun ship of the line Pieter Paulus, 180 feet long, was built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam in 1798-1800. Pieter Paulus was renamed Utrecht in 1807 and broken up in Hellevoetsluis in 1815. The 68-gun ship of the line Admiraal Tromp was also built by Glavimans in Rotterdam, in 1806, and was broken up in 1830.2 A.J. Vermeulen, De schepen van de Koninklijke Marine en die der gouvernementsmarine 1814-1962, The Hague 1962, pp. 1, 5.

Scale (on model) approx. 1:44.
