Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. The sheer rises towards both ends. One wale and a sheer rail are indicated, both are painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead with two cheeks and a bollard timber. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is slightly S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of two masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

The 16-gun brig Galathe, 114 feet long, was built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam in 1795. Galathe was captured by the British at the Vlieter in 1799. The 16-gun brig Daphne, 114 feet long, was built by Glavimans a year later. This brig was converted and upgraded to a sloop of war in 1801. After being penned in the Spanish port of Malaga by a British blockade, Galathe was handed over by the Dutch to the befriended Spanish Navy.1HNA 1.01.47.36 Admiraliteitscolleges, Losse Aanwinsten, inv. no. 17, Genealogie Asmus.
