Face of Christ

anonymous, c. 1480 - c. 1510

The manuscript was probably compiled for novices of a Dutch Augustinian monastery. A print of the face of Christ was pasted on a page that was intentionally left blank, as an incentive to prayer and meditation. The Christ type in this hitherto unknown engraving closely resembles painted versions by the Flemish masters Rogier van der Weyden and Dirck Bouts.

    Gravure in een handschrift met teksten van Sint-Augustinus, ca. 1500. Het handschrift werd waarschijnlijk samengesteld voor novicen van een Nederlands Augustinesser klooster. Op een blad dat met opzet werd leeggelaten is een gravure geplakt met het gezicht van Christus. Het Christus-type van de tot dusver onbekende prent lijkt sterk op geschilderde versies van de Vlaamse meesters Van der Weyden, Memling en Bouts.
