Folding Screen with Shinto Shrine in Snow

Kawamata Kōhō, c. 1920 - c. 1940

Kawamata Koho lavished attention on the shrine’s wooden structure, as well as on the hushed snowy landscape with subtle gradations of grey tones in the trees. A flame is visible in the doorway, above which a gong hangs from a cord. The faithful could ring it to summon the gods.

    Een tweeslags kamerscherm met een voorstelling van een besneeuwd landschap met bomen en een houten gebouw van een shinto schrijn, met links op de voorgrond zeven mussen. In het open middengedeelte van de schrijn een koord met een gong, met daaronder een vlam.
