Explanatory note

  • Ter gelegenheid van het bezoek aan Nederland van een Japanse overheidsgezantschap werden, toen dit gezelschap op 15 juli 1862 bij de Koninklijke Munt in Utrect was, drie zilveren en een aantal koperen gedenkpenningen geslagen. De zilveren penningen werden aan de Japanse gezanten geschonken, voor de andere aanwezige 'autoriteiten' was een koperen exemplaar beschikbaar. De teksten luiden (in het Japans) 'Nippon Taikoen no sei-si Holanda ni kataroe' (een gezantschap van de grootheer van Japan komt naar Nederland) en op de keerzijde (in Chinese karakters) 'Rijoo koku Sin-boku másu másu' (van beide rijken de vriendschap meer en meer innig'). Dezelfde delegatie bezocht tevens de Marinemodellenkamer in Den Haag

Entry

On recto the crowned coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Japanese flag on a coat of arms are depicted, together with the years 1609 and 1862. On verso an inscription in Japanese (Kanji) surrounded by a Dutch inscription.

The medal was made in honour of the visit of the first Japanese delegation to the Netherlands in 1862, specifically their visit to the Rijksmunt (Royal Mint) in Utrecht. The delegation also visited the Navy Model Room in The Hague.
