Dutchmen at a Meal

anonymous, 1790 - 1810

This print was intended for the tourist market in Nagasaki and illustrates the eating habits of the Dutch on Deshima. Two enslaved men are serving the diners at table, one approaching with a bowl of food, the other pouring gin from a glass bottle. Loosely translated, the text reads ‘This print is a faithful depiction of Dutchmen.’

    Vijf Nederlandse mannen aan de maaltijd, zittend aan een tafel met een tafelkleed en schalen met eten, met Chinese stoelen en twee kwispedoors. Twee slaafgemaakten uit de Indonesische archipel bedienen aan tafel: een schenkt uit een glazen jeneverfles, de ander draagt een dienblad met eten binnen. Linksvoor een stoel met het VOC monogram op de rug. Opschrift; boven: HOLLANDER / Deze print is zuiver gedrukt. Waarschijnlijk gaat het hier om het VOC-personeel op Deshima. (Nagasaki-e)
