Explanatory note
De dodendoeken van de Toraja bevolking uit Centraal Sulawesi behoren tot de meest spectaculaire doeken van de archipel. Ze zijn meer dan vier meter lang en versierd met slangenhuid-achtige (patola) motieven. De doeken zijn buiten het Toraja gebied vervaardigd. Deze doeken zijn gebruikt als wandversiering in de doodskamer, als lijkwade of als kleding. De doeken hebben de typische Toraja kleuren: zwart, rood en wit. Zwart symboliseert het einde van het leven en rood het bloed van offerdieren. Wit is de kleur van de allerhoogste Godheid.
