Het gedicht is een satire op William Gilpin, die in Groot-Brittannië op zoek ging naar 'het pittoreske'. Het gedicht verscheen voor het eerst met illustraties van Rowlandson in The Poetical Magazine, tussen 1809 en 1811. Voor de editie uit 1819 zijn nieuwe platen gemaakt.
