Commandostaf vermoedelijk van Jan van Riebeeck

Officer's baton, 1658. This staff probably belonged to Jan van Riebeeck (1619-1677). In 1652, Van Riebeeck was ordered by the VOC to build a fortress at the Cape. A hospital and barracks for slaves soon followed. A vegetable garden was planted and later a water reservoir installed, crucial for the provision of fresh supplies to VOC ships.

    Staf, naar boven toe iets breder uitlopend, bekroond door een ronde holle zilveren knop op een iets uitkragend randje. Aan de onderkant een smal zilveren beslag. Gedateerd op de knop: 1658.
