Chestnut Jar with Saucer
anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1720
This type of vessel is traditionally called a ‘chestnut jar’ because, amongst others, roasted chestnuts were served in it. This vessel was made to order for a European client and to a European design. The knob in the shape of an eating squirrel fits in nicely with the jar’s function, although the creature is probably munching on grapes.
