Captured Ordnance

anonymous, c. 1750 - c. 1850

After Java was brought entirely under Dutch rule during the Java War (1825–1830), the Dutch sought to gain control of the other Indonesian islands as well. Various military expeditions were mounted to force the rulers of these islands to recognize Dutch authority. These cannons were seized during those battles. One is an old Dutch East India Company cannon of 1667.

  • Description

    Lilla, bronzen voorlader op mik. De ronde loop heeft een trompetvormige monding en het achtergedeelte is dikker; op drie plaatsen is de loop met rotan omwoeld. De holle staart voor een houten richtstok is grotendeels afgebroken. Vóór het zundgat een richtknop. De ogen van de mik zijn geheel om de de tappen heen gesmeed, zodat het stuk niet uit de mik getild kan worden.

Explanatory note

  • Op 12 en 15 november 1843 werden deze twee lilla's (NG-MC-1071 & 1072) in de wateren van Soemanap door Z.M. stoomschip Phoenix onder bevel van Ltz J.W. Stoll, bij een gevecht buitgemaakt waarbij zeven zeeroversvaartuigen werden gezonken. Deze lilla is geschikt voor kogel van ca. 0.5 pond.

Entry

Bronze muzzle-loading gun on a swivel.

The gun has a bell-shaped round muzzle and the barrel thickens at the first reinforcement. The barrel is wrapped in rattan in three places. The gun has a damaged tubular hollow cascabel button, to fit a wooden tiller. In front of the vent a sight button is positioned. The trunnion rings of the bronze yoke are forged around the trunnions, so that the gun cannot be removed from the yoke.

This lantaka and NG-MC-1072 were captured in the waters of Soemanap on 12 and 15 November 1843 by the Dutch paddle steamer Phoenix under the command of Lieutenant 1st class J.W. Stoll, in a battle in which seven pirate vessels were sunk.
