Buffet cupboard

anonymous, attributed to Asmus Frauen, c. 1755 - c. 1765

The buffet cupboard is surmounted by the sea god Neptune, accompanied by two tritons, and is supported by two tigers. The ornamental carving is closely related to work done by Frauen in 1744 in a house in Alkmaar. In making this piece, which was also richly adorned with carving on the inside, the sculptor played a more important role than the cabinetmaker.
