Brush Rest

anonymous, c. 1575 - c. 1599

The brush rest in the shape of a mountain ridge consists of patterns of rocks and waves and five-clawed dragons. The hollows between the dragons’ heads are for resting the brushes. The five-clawed dragon decoration is frequently found on the objects produced in the imperial workshop.

    Penseelhouder van porselein, beschilderd in onderglazuur blauw. De houder heeft de vorm van een halfellipsvormige rotswand. Vijf vijf-klauwige draken, hun koppen uitstekend boven rotsen en golven, vormen de rotspunten; het bovenste deel met een aantal gaten; het onderste deel met een band onderglazuur blauw met daarin uitgespaard een gemodelleerde, geschulpte lijn. Gemerkt op de onderzijde met een zes-karaktermerk van keizer Wanli in een dubbele rechthoek. Ming porselein in blauw-wit.
