Leg Prostheses

anonymous, c. 1870 - c. 1871

The Société de Secours aux Blessés Militaires endeavoured from 1864 to aid wounded soldiers by providing them with leg prostheses and other items. This photograph belongs to a larger series illustrating prostheses, ambulances, stretchers, and other equipment. They were taken around the time of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. With the photographs the Société possibly wanted to draw attention to its charitable deeds and raise money.
