Bedspread with a cypress-shaped, tree pattern

anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1799

Chintz is a multicoloured cotton fabric produced in India and decorated by means of a woodblock print, and hand-painted floral and other motifs. Chintz was imported into Europe in the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company, and in large quantities brought to Persia (Iran), Siam (Thailand), Indonesia, China and Japan. The main pattern on this bedspread is an Indian form of the ‘tree of life.’
