Barometer and thermometer

Jan Paauw jr., c. 1760

Jan Paauw was a talented instrument maker who made a name for himself both in and outside of Leiden. This instrument case features extremely beautiful and elegantly sculpted decorations in the Rococo style. The case was possibly not made in Leiden but in one of the more important centres of cabinetmaking, such as The Hague, Rotterdam or Amsterdam.

    Barometer en thermometer op een eikenhouten bord belijmd met wortelnotenhout. Het bord vertoont bovenaan een uitgezaagde koperen schaalplaat van de barometer, waaronder een dergelijke plaat voor de thermometer, die met de alcoholbuis tussen twee geprofileerde lijsten omhoog kan worden geschoven. Om de kwikbak onderaan zit een opschuifbaar kastje, bekroond met rocaille-ornament. Het achterbord heeft links en rechts profiellijsten; onder en boven rocailles. Twee platen getekend: "J. Paauw Jr. Leyden".
