Antiochus ligt in bed en drijgt te sterven van liefde voor zijn stiefmoeder Stratonice. Hofarts Erasistratos voelt de pols van de stervende. Koning Seleucus doet afstand van zijn vrouw Stratonice ten gunste van zijn zoon Antiochus.
