Anneke Jacobs van Thetenbul voor en na een operatie

Cornelis Visscher (II), 1656

Disease is universal. At the age of 17, Anneke travelled all the way from Northern Germany to Amsterdam to have a tumour removed. A large team had been assembled for this unusual and risky procedure. Afterwards, the surgeon described the operation himself for educational purposes in medical publications. Fortunately, Anneke recovered well and judging from the engraving scarring was minimal.
