A pair of vases

Kôno, c. 1900

These two vases are decorated with naturalistically represented cranes and pine trees on a deep-blue ground. Both pine trees and cranes symbolise long life. The detailed rendering and sophisticated colour nuances illustrate the technical progress undergone by the cloisonné enamel process since the opening of Japan in 1854. Like Tokyo and Nagoya, Yokohama was a centre for the export of cloisonné enamel wares.

  • Description

    De vaas met brede schouders is donkerblauw geëmailleerd en versierd met een pijnboom, waar omheen een klimplant zich wikkelt. Twee vliegende, witte kraanvogels en één op de stam zittend met ingetrokken hals. Langs de voet halve cirkels waarin witte bloemen, afgewisseld door diverse ornamenten en een rand van punten, waarin grijze halve rozetten; langs de bovenrand een overeenkomstige versiering en op de platte rand witte rozetten afgewisseld door halve rozetten. Binnen in de vaas een koperen rand langs de mondopening. Bij de vaas hoort een houten voetstuk (AK-RBK-14608-B-2).
