A Statenbijbel (States Bible)

Paulus Aertsz. van Ravesteyn, 1637

The Word of God – the Bible – is at the heart of the Dutch Reformed faith. In 1619 the States General, the Netherlands’ highest governing body, even commissions a new, ‘pure’ translation, which must be used in every church from then on. This explains why this Bible is called the ‘States Bible.’ The translation takes eighteen years. Every word is subject to lengthy debate. Changes are introduced up to the last moment, even in the opening lines. The translation is published only in 1637.

Statenbijbel, gebonden in bruin leren band, met sluitwerk op de randen, eerste druk. Op band is zowel op voor- als achterplat centr. cartouche in leer gedrukt. Inhoud: titelblad, oude testament, nieuwe testament en apocriefe boeken. Voorin bevinden zich nog twee losse folio-bladen met aantekeningen en prent met portret van M.H. Tromp. Bijbeltekst is in Gothisch schrift; de eerste kapitaal van elk hoofdstuk is versierd met prent of fantasie-patroon. Opschrift; BIBLIA, / Dat is: / De gantsche H. Schrifture enz. Gesigneerd.
