1994 – Portrait #16

Pieter Hugo, 2016

In 2017, Hugo portrayed the first children born ‘free’ in his native South Africa following the end of the Apartheid regime in 1994. The Rwandan genocide also took place in 1994 and Hugo captured Rwandan children born thereafter as well. From this portrait series featuring children set in an idyllic landscape, the photographer donated two South African portraits to complement the 2015 Rijksmuseum exhibition Good Hope: South Africa and the Netherlands from 1600, in 2015.
