Uittreksel

"Ten Categories of Collected Antiquities," a late Edo period illustrated catalog of old art objects edited by the charismatic bureaucrat and tea adept Matsudaira Sadanobu 松平定信 (1758-1829). The 85 volume work catalogs 1,859 objects divided into ten categories: bell inscriptions, tomb inscriptions, arms, musical instruments, paintings and calligraphy, seals, framed name tablets portraits, bronze utensils, and writing implements. Because many of the objects are reproduced in woodblock-printed pictures, the work is a valuable art historical resource. Together with the priest Haku'un 白雲 (1764-1825) and the painters Oono Sen'yuu 巨野泉祐 and Tani Bunchou 谷文晁 (1763-1840), Sadanobu traveled around Japan studying art works before publishing the massive catalog between 1789-1804. The original edition is housed at Chinkoku shukoku Jinja 鎮国守国神社 in Kuwana 桑名 city , Mie prefecture.
