"Supervised by the Ministry of Culture and hosted by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the National Art Exhibition R.O.C. is in its 13th year now. It aims to discover and nurture artistic talents and encourage them to make art. To have more artists take part and enliven the art community, this year, the NTMoFA raises the prize money up in all categories. With the infusion of public resources and the augmented financial support, the NTMoFA hopes to express its deep care for artists. Every year, the National Art Exhibition draws many artists to send entries for the prizes and a chance to display their works. It is a platform for Taiwanese artists to make themselves heard, as well as a government-hosted prestigious contest for the art community in Taiwan. The 2023 National Art Exhibition R.O.C. calls for submissions in 11 categories: ink painting, Chinese calligraphy, seal engraving, gouache painting, oil painting, watercolor painting, prints, sculpture, photography, new media arts, and mixed media. The NTMoFA has especially invited experts and scholars in these fields to serve as jury members. After two meticulous rounds of screenings and reviews, in each category, a golden prize, a silver prize, a bronze prize, and several selection award winners were selected. A total of 117 artworks finally stood out. This year's exhibition saw the participation of many experienced artists and young talents. There are even artists who have received the top three prizes for three years in a row, and they have truly been garnering energy to create outstanding results. These include four artists in three categories, prints, seal engraving, and sculpture, who received the honorary 'Jury Exemption Prize.' By offering excellent works of art to this grand occasion, they have become special, exemplary figures. In fact, among the award winners this year, one new 'Jury Exemption' winner will be born. From next year on, this artist will be invited to showcase his/her work at the exhibition for three continuous years."-- Director's preface (page 5).
