Crafts reforming in Kyoto (1910-1940): a struggle between tradition and renovation
Uittreksel
Focuses on the craft movements in Kyoto from the Taisho to the first half of the Showa period. This period, from the Taisho to the first part of the Showa period, was a time of great upheaval in modern art with the emergence of various radical movements. The influence of modernism and Art Deco was seen in crafts, centering around Tokyo, from the end of the Taisho period, producing works which were different in form as well as in design from traditional works. Influenced by such tendencies, various progressive movements also developed in Kyoto around the same time, and groups and organizations were founded, especially in the fields of ceramics, lacquers, textiles, which were the major industries of Kyoto, searching for crafts suitable for a new era and trying to establish individuality and gain the freedom of creation--From foreword.
