Passion of collecting: selecting pieces from the collection of the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts

Uittreksel

Tokyo University of the Arts traces its collection back to the founding of its predecessor, the Tokyo Fine Arts School, where Okakura Tenshin and colleagues began acquiring works as educational materials. Over more than 120 years, the collection has grown to include both renowned masterpieces and rare documents. This exhibition presents about 140 carefully selected items, including works gathered by key figures such as Okakura, Masaki Naohiko, Kuroda Seiki, and Hirakushi Denchū. Divided into four chapters, it highlights early acquisitions, works collected during Masaki’s long principalship, the development of the Western painting collection under Kuroda, and Hirakushi’s modern sculpture collection.
