Official catalog of the exhibition "Henri Matisse, le laboratoire intérieur" from 2 December 2016 to 6 March 2017 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Recognized for his paintings with vibrant and dazzling chromaticism, Matisse also devoted himself to the practice of drawing, a daily discipline that allowed him to conquer the greatest freedom. The exhibition retraces, around 250 works, the blossoming of his work drawn around a series: the academies, drawings with the brush fauves of 1905-1906, the portrait work in the years 1910, the "Cinquante dessins" of 1919-1920, announcing the odalisques of the Niçois period, the transparent line drawings of 1935-1937, immediately followed by long-drawn charcoals in 1938-1939, the "flowering" of Themes and Variations in 1941-1942 and the monumental brush drawings from the years 1947-1952.
