Bernini's architectural drawings
Door
Uittreksel
This publication presents an updated catalogue raisonné of architectural drawings by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, expanding the fundamental catalogue published in German by Heinrich Brauer and Rudolf Wittkower in 1931. Their research of nearly a century ago is certainly the most frequently cited source in the history of baroque art, and it remains among the most influential books ever issued by the Bibliotheca Hertziana - Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome. Nonetheless, their work has never been systematically revised, extended, or translated. The present volumes offer three paths for appreciating the original catalogue by concentrating on the discussion of architecture, to which half of the text was dedicated. The unabridged English translation is meant to bring the text to a wider audience and explicate its nuances. The publication history of Brauer and Wittkower, espeically in the context of more recent contributions, seeks to situate their ground-breaking contribution in the historiography of the field. Finally, by complementing the integral text with essays based on more recent studies of the drawings and monuments, we endeavor to bring the work up to date. It was this final task that Brauer and Wittkower had in mind when, in 1969, they themselves called for revisions to the catalogue by a new generation of scholars. back cover
