Abstract
With 'Women's Palette', Museum Dr8888 and Museum De Wieger offer a platform to 24 female artists, thereby providing a multifaceted picture of the female avant-garde in the first half of the twentieth century. The book shows a cross-section of modern movements and tells the story of these special women, placing their choices within the spirit of the times. Well-known and lesser-known artists are discussed, including Charley Toorop, Jacoba van Heemskerck, Else Berg, Lou Loeber, Alida Pott, Anna Sluijter and Jemmy van Hoboken. The life stories of these progressive women are outlined in concise biographies. In addition, the authors examine the position of female artists in more detail. What were the (im)possibilities, which choices did they have to make and which roads did they open up for generations after them?
