Journey across the seas: commemorating the donation : the Nishida Collection : ceramics, lacquerware, and more

Abstract

"In 2021, the Nezu Museum received the donation of a collection of 169 art-craft objects, principally ceramics from the East and the West, from Nishida Hiroko, advisor to our museum. Nishida Hiroko (b. 1939) is a scholar who research art-crafts, particularly East Asian ceramics. After receiving her doctorate from Oxford University in 1975, she returned to Japan. Having began working at our museum in 1981, she has served as director of the Curatorial Department, deputy director of the museum, and executive trustee; she is now its advisor. During these four decades, she has planned and carried out many of the pathbreaking exhibitions that exemplify our museum today. The Nishida Collection, built through her keen eye as a researcher and curator, powered by her insatiable curiosity, contains many objects that are not only works of art but also valuable artifacts for research purposes. It also includes many works that fill gaps in our museum's collection"-- Introduction, Kōichi Nezu (page 4).
