The activities of Pieter Brattinga: a portrait of an era

Abstract

"In this book a picture is drawn, in the light of Pieter Brattinga's activities, of the range of the profession of visual communications specialist. Brattinga's ideas on this subject are the thread running through all his activities, joining them together. Because Brattinga is active in various cultural fields the description of his life and work also gives an impression of the developments and theories of the last 30 years in diverse art disciplines. In this book several aspects of Brattinga's work are high lighted. Besides the graphic designs attention is given to Brattinga's activities as exhibition coordinator for steendrukkerij de Jong & Co., editor and publisher of the Quadrat Prints, exhibition designer and project coordinator. Attention is also given to his own Print Gallery. His activities for Pratt Institute are also discussed, for which he developed an educational program. The book is completed with a biography and bibliography. Pieter Brattinga belongs to an international group of designers who set the tone in the graphic field after the Second World War and who still, in 1989, occupy a notable position among their younger colleagues. Pieter Brattinga occupies a special place in the cultural life of the Netherlands.
