Abstract
Why did the Dutch in the 18th century wish to pour tea from an English pot shaped like a pineapple or cauliflower? Why did they want copies of classical ornamental vases dotted around their homes? What made a certain style so attractive, why did it subsequently lose its appeal? What are the stories behind these objects? This book provides twenty-two short and accessible chapters describing the 18th century social, cultural and political circumstances that determined the shape, decoration and popularity of a certain piece of ceramics. Thereby illustrating the spirit of the times and becoming part of Dutch national heritage.
