The ms. contains instructions for liquid-grain aquatint and lift-ground. These techniques were first applied in the Netherlands by about 1810 by the engraver and publisher Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834). Other Netherlands engravers used Ploos van Amstel’s transfer technique and only gradually started using liquid grain aquatint from 1815 onwards. Maaskamp, as publisher, had contacts with English publishers from shortly after 1800. He will have learned how to use liquid grain aquatint in England, applied it as first engraver in the Netherlands and introduced it with other Netherlands engravers. (Ad Stijnman)
